AI, naturally
Da Vinci’s birds, SCOTUS, and intelligent hospitality (Issue 35)

From the first airplane designs to Walmart’s bee-like drone pollinators, instances of technology mimicking the complex functionings of nature are all around us. Even so, the pursuit of besting the creations of the natural world through discussions around AGI, or artificial general intelligence, is the equivalent of an evolutionary dead-end. It’s worthwhile to work toward world-changing scientific breakthroughs with nature as an inspiration, but it’s false to say something like AGI is anything but a long ways off.

“How can AI helpyou?”
Da Vinci’s birds, SCOTUS, and intelligent hospitality (Issue 35)

Excelling in the hospitality industry requires an intimate understanding of people and how to fulfill their wishes, so it should be safe to assume that jobs in that field would be reserved for humans. Not anymore. Tech-savvy hotels are now adopting AI and robotics to delight guests with the latest innovations in customizable comfort. Robot-delivered room service and AI concierges and are just a few of the amenities you may encounter on your next overnight trip.

Celebrities: they’re just like us. They want to feel safe in their own homes as anyone else does, but high-profile people’s houses are often specifically targeted for burglaries. That’s why some are turning to AI-powered security systems to protect their properties. Home security AI isn’t limited to the A-list, though; anyone who is seeking peace of mind ― and has the means to afford the latest in security tech ― can employ AI-powered drones and cameras. Burglars, be gone.

The question of whether AIs are due the same rights as humans will be put to legal tests soon enough. Therefore, the recent nomination of Brett Kavanaugh to the Supreme Court may have significant bearing on how AI and other frontier technologies will develop. If confirmed, Kavanaugh could contribute to future rulings on net neutrality, user privacy, and big tech companies’ monopolization of certain markets ― all of which will directly impact innovation.
