Alphabet-owned Nest has today announced that it’s finally addingtwo-factor account authentication to its mobile application. Once activated, theoptional feature will require usersto enter a verification code sent to them via SMS, as well as their regular password, every time they log in.
In order to take advantage of the functionality, users will need to have the latest version of the Nest client installed on their smartphone or tablet, then all they need to do is open the menu located in the top-left, tap Account Security andpress 2-Step Verification . After they’ve confirmed their number, they’ll need to sign into their account again. They should then be good to go.
Why now?Nest’s decisionto implement two-factor authentication comes shortly aftera major DDoS attack raised questions about the security measures smart home platforms employ to prevent attackers from using them as an entry point to gain control of homes. While this isn’t the most secure additional security measure, itwill at least put an extra barrier between prying eyes and useraccounts.
